About University of Miami
The University of Miami (Florida), informally referred to as simply Miami, UM or The U, is a private, non-sectarian university, with the main campus located in Coral Gables, which is a city in Miami-Dade County, in the US state of Florida, southwest of downtown Miami, with a population estimated at a number of more than 42 000 inhabitants, during the 2005 census.
UM traces its roots back in 1925, when a group of citizens chartered the University of Miami, wishing to offer `unique opportunities to develop inter-American studies, to further creative work in the arts and letters, and to conduct teaching and research programs in tropical studies`.
UM’s student enrollment was estimated in 2009 at a number of nearly 15 700 students, to whom the university offers 115 undergraduate, 114 master’s, 51 doctoral and 2 professional areas of study, through 12 separate colleges, including a law school, a medical school, as well as a school that is focused on the study of atmospheric sciences and oceanography.
According to a 2010 edition of the U.S. News & World Report, UM occupies the 50th place among national universities, the Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine is the 47th best medical school in the nation and the School of Law is ranked 60th among the best law school in the nation. The university received a high ranking from Academic Ranking of World Universities, as well, according to which UM is one of the world’s top 200 academic institutions.
The athletic teams from UM are known as the Miami Hurricanes, who compete in 15 sports in the Atlantic Coast Conference, since 2004, including football, baseball, tennis, diving and volleyball, being best known for their achievements in baseball and football, in which they’ve experienced most of their victories, in the past years.
